What is the SWAP Program?
The Students Working at the Army in Parallel (SWAP) Program is a student employment initiative that connects top talent with hands-on opportunities in the defense industry. Originated and operated through the UAH Systems Management and Production (SMAP) Center, the program allows undergraduate and graduate students to gain real-world experience while working alongside professionals at the U.S. Army, MDA, NASA, and other government agencies.
Why Get Involved?
Participating in SWAP opens the door to a wide range of technical and professional experiences. Students work on projects in areas such as:
- Systems engineering and design
- Digital engineering
- Cybersecurity and network management
- Directed energy and atmospheric propagation
- Information systems and data analytics
- Supply chain management and Foreign Military Sales (FMS)
- Finance, economics, and government contracting
This early exposure to defense-related research and development helps prepare students for future full-time careers in both civil service and the defense contractor sector.
Proven Results
The SWAP program has a strong legacy of success, with over 1,100 students participating since 2004. Of these:
- More than 350 students have become full-time Civil Service employees
- Over 400 SWAP alumni are now working with defense contractors
That means three out of every four SWAP participants go on to build careers in the defense sector—making it one of the most impactful student employment programs of its kind.
